If four times a number plus 3 is 11, what is the number?

The number is 2 

To find the answer set the problem up like this:

4X + 3 = 11

Now, solve for X.
Whatever you do to one side of the = sign, do to the other side.
Take 3 away from both sides: 4x = 8
Now divide both sides by 4: x = 2
