One of the main ways in which Mary McLeod Bethune brought about a positive change in America today was that she was a major proponent of education for young people--especially young African Americans--during the middle of the 20th Century. She founded a private school for African-American students, and was even appointed by President Roosevelt as a national advisor of African American issues in the US.
