4x - 2 (x - 2) = -9 + 5x -8

Do the indicated mult.  Then          4x - 2 x + 4 = -9 + 5x -8

Combining like terms,                      2x + 4 = 5x - 17
                                                                21 = 3x
                                                                 x = 7 (answer)
