Jake got the expression 7x plus 1 and then wrote his answer as 1 plus 7x. Is his answer an equivalent expression? How do you know?

7x+1 is equal to 1+7x.

According to the commutative property of addition, it doesn't matter what order you add things in, you'll still get the same answer.

It’s equivalent. You are using the commutative property. If you switch the numbers to opposite sides in addition or multiplying, it will be equal.
