Both events, 9/11 and the Cold War, have invented a common enemy, against whom all various nationalities united. Those are the enemies on which ethnically heterogeneous Americans focused their suspicions, fears, animosities, as well as their bigotry and xenophobia. American identity is a mixture of all kinds of identities of the immigrants that constitute U.S. In peaceful times, they rage against each other. When there is an enemy, their hatred and paranoia focuses on that enemy.
