the roots of the trees bind the topsoil altogether and it prevents the wind and water to carry away the soil. When there is deforestation the binding of the soil particles is greatly affected, and the most fertile part of the soil (the top layer) can be carried away by floods for example. This makes the soil infertile eventually leading to desertification.
