What is an aurora, and how does it form? (on the sun)

Auroras are a sign that the sun and earth are connected by more than sunlight, they indicate that something is happening in space. The aurora forms when charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare penetrate the earths magnetic shield and collides with the atoms and molecules in our atmosphere.
