The quadratic formula is one way to obtain the solution of the quadratic equation. It is expressed as:

x = (-b +/-
√b² - 4ac ) / 2a

where, for this problem, a = -2, b = -16 and c = -44.

We solve as follows:

 x = (-b +/- √b² - 4ac ) / 2a
x = (-(-16) +/- √(-16)² - 4(-2)(-44) ) / 2(-2)
x = (16 +/- √256 - 352 ) / -4
x = (16 +/- √-96 ) / -4
x = -(16 +/- 4i√6 ) / 4
