There are 336 different ways that the 8 runners can place in first, second, and third. I used 8 and 3 as my permutations.

[tex]\frac{8!}{(8-3)!} = \frac{8!}{5!} = \frac{8*7*6*5!}{5!} =8*7*6=336[/tex]
